In the 80s my grandmother knitted a top for my mother. It was made with a multicoloured cotton/linen that looked like a rainbow paddlepop when it was knitted up. It has been loved to threadbare death by my mother and my sisters and I. It has a very simple design; straight armscye and sleevehead and an oversized scoop neckline that falls off one shoulder.
I now have custody of a box full of my grandmother’s old knitting patterns, and I found the one in question. Patons ‘Summer Style’ book 757, using ‘Focus On Linen’ yarn. The model in the picture even has a necklace with little wooden parrots just like my mother!
Though I always loved the paddlepop colour, pastels are never as exciting to me as bright bold colours. I chose the Yellow, Red and Navy because that combination had been haunting me for a while in the form of a handbag my sister bought in Hong Kong.
The yarn is Filatura Di Crosa’s Millefilli Fine, which I have some experience with, having used it to knit my sister’s wedding dress (better than it sounds, I’ll save that clothes story for another day). It has a lovely sheen and drape, and is easy to knit.
I followed the pattern faithfully, and all I have to report is that the sleeve openings are a touch too tight. I should have cast on with a little less tension. Otherwise, I think this will be a fine addition to my growing wardrobe of projects.
